Roberts ProjectsLos AngelesRoberts Projects said Betye Saar died in her sleep in the early hours of 26 July 2026 in Los Angeles, four days before her 100th birthday. Born Betye Irene Brown there on 30 July 1926, she became a defining assemblage artist of the Black Arts Movement; The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1972) and Black Girl’s Window (1969) reframed racist memorabilia as protest. ArtNews notes I’ll Bend But I Will Not Break (1998) is on view at LACMA. Roberts lists centennial shows at the New-York Historical Society through 4 October 2026 and the Huntington through 30 November 2027. She is survived by daughters Lezley, Alison and Tracye Saar-Cavanaugh and six grandchildren.
BBC NewsLos AngelesPeter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, has died at 85Agent Kevin Motley confirmed to Variety, BBC News and ABC News that Peter Cullen died on 26 August 2026 at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was disclosed. His family said he died peacefully, surrounded by family, and asked that people remember the line he tied to Optimus Prime: “be strong enough to be gentle.” Cullen originated the Autobot leader in the 1980s Transformers series, returned for the live-action films from 2007, and also voiced Eeyore in Disney’s Winnie-the-Pooh animation. BBC notes a 2011 Daytime Emmy nomination and a 2023 Children’s & Family Emmy lifetime achievement award. Variety says he is survived by four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.ARTnewsLos Angeles
