White House and Interior threaten to cut federal agency support for the Smithsonian

In an August 28 letter to the Smithsonian Board of Regents recently made public, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley wrote that executive agencies “cannot in good conscience continue to support the Smithsonian under current leadership” by loaning artifacts, enabling procurement, or making discretionary grants. The letter alleges possible federal antidiscrimination-law violations tied to institutional culture and asks Regents to meet administration officials. ARTnews, CNN, The Independent and others reported the escalation on 2–3 September; outlets said the Smithsonian had not immediately commented.
