Christopher Rothko gifts a 1934 Gloucester harbor painting to the Cape Ann Museum

Cape Ann Museum’s 20 August 2026 press release says Dr. Christopher Rothko donated Mark Rothko’s 1934 watercolor and gouache Untitled (wharf, Gloucester, Massachusetts) to the permanent collection—the museum’s first Rothko. The work is on view in Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea through 27 September 2026 before the show travels to The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., in October. Director Oliver Barker and Christopher Rothko are quoted in the release; a symposium with Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel is listed for 17–18 September.
