China sentences artist Gao Zhen to three years over satirical Mao sculptures

The Sanhe City People’s Court in Hebei sentenced Gao Zhen on 25 August for slandering China’s heroes and martyrs. The Gao Brothers artist, detained since August 2024, plans to appeal; Amnesty International called the verdict an assault on artistic freedom.
