Canada still cannot account for 111 works in its federal Indigenous art collection

The Art Newspaper reported on 21 August 2026 that Canada still cannot locate 111 works from the Indigenous Art Centre’s collection of more than 5,000 peer-juried pieces by First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists, valued at about C$14.4 million. A November 2024 CIRNAC audit had listed 132 as unaccounted for; spokesperson Maryéva Métellus said 17 are now resolved (six found in storage, 11 database duplicates) and that 20 of the remaining 111 are reproductions. She told TAN the label is a records designation, not a finding of theft, and that no criminal investigations are underway. Artforum and The Canadian Press confirmed the 111 figure.
