David Hockney, painter of pools and Yorkshire light, has died at 88

Hockney’s representatives said the Bradford-born artist died peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday. BBC and The Art Newspaper reported King Charles, Keir Starmer and Tate Britain among the tributes. Born 9 July 1937, he was known for Los Angeles pool paintings including A Bigger Splash (1967), Yorkshire and Normandy landscapes, and iPad drawings. He is survived by partner Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima, great-nephew Richard Hockney, and brothers Philip and John. Tate said planned 2027 Tate Britain and Tate Modern projects will continue.
