Thieves steal Antonello da Messina works from Messina’s MuMe on Ferragosto

On the evening of 15 August 2026, during Messina’s Assumption Day celebrations, thieves took three panels from Antonello’s 1473 San Gregorio Polyptych and a double-sided panel from the Museo Regionale di Messina (MuMe); two other polyptych panels were abandoned outside and recovered. Carabinieri and regional authorities are investigating; four on-duty custodians have been transferred pending disciplinary review.
