China pavilion curators formally withdraw from Gwangju Biennale at 3 September press conference
Chinese pavilion curators told a morning press conference at Gwangju’s Ha Jung-woong Art Museum on 3 September that they unanimously decided to withdraw the China Pavilion from the 16th Gwangju Biennale (opens 5 September), citing the organizer’s use of the name Taiwan Pavilion. Speaker Ruan Yuanlai (루안 웨라이) said political elements had entered the arts; installation work had been halted since 28 August. Seoul Shinmun and Sportalkorea/News1 report the on-site declaration; a Guangzhou municipal delegation also cancelled a 6–7 September Jeonnam-Gwangju visit in protest. Gwangju Biennale Foundation still hopes China will return.
