UK export bar keeps Rembrandt’s £71m Catrina Hooghsaet in play through December

DCMS deferred export of Rembrandt’s 1657 Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet through 26 December 2026 inclusive, calling it the most expensive object given national-treasure status. A UK buyer would need to match £71,696,324.90 plus VAT of £754,698.15; a second nine-month deferral can follow an option agreement. The Arts Minister announcement landed 27 August and remained a major story on 28 August.
