Photographer sues Elizabeth Peyton over 1996 Oasis painting

Welsh photographer Justin Thomas filed a copyright suit in the Southern District of New York on 20 August 2026 against Elizabeth Peyton, David Zwirner Gallery, and Sotheby’s, alleging that Earl’s Court (Liam + Noel) (1996) copies his 1995 photograph of Liam and Noel Gallagher. The painting sold at Sotheby’s New York in May 2026 for $1,920,000. The complaint is an allegation; Peyton’s fair-use defense has not been ruled on.
