Denmark’s largest known Viking Age silver hoard — 18.5kg from a Rebild garden — unveiled by Nordjyske Museer

Nordjyske Museer announced on 3 September 2026 that 18.5kg of silver found in a private garden in Rebild, North Jutland, is Denmark’s largest known Viking Age hoard — nearly three times the c.6.5kg Terslev hoard. Deposited in a clay vessel in the 900s, it holds about 700 objects and fragments: silver ingots, arm rings, 47 whole and fragmentary coins, a small Thor’s hammer and cut silver; about 320 pieces weighing 6.4kg were still in the pot. Two Anglo-Saxon pennies of Edward the Elder (r. 899–924) date it. Declared danefæ, it goes to the National Museum of Denmark.
